Shannen Maria Doherty (April 12, 1971 – July 13, 2024) was an American actress known for her TV series Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1990. In 1991 and 1992 her portrayal of Brenda earned her a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Young Actress Starring in a Television Series. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, to Tom and Rosa Doherty. She was raised in her mother’s Southern Baptist faith. She was of Irish and Native American descent.
Doherty played roles in both television and film, including Jenny Wilder in Little House on the Prairie (1982–1983), Maggie Malene in Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985), Kris Witherspoon in Our House (1986–1988), Heather Duke in Heathers (1989), Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990–1994), 90210 (2008–2009) and BH90210 (2019), Prue Halliwell in Charmed (1998–2001), and Dobbs in Fortress (2021). Doherty’s career afterward consisted primarily of made-for-TV movies, though she also had a lead role in Mallrats, Silent Bob Strike Back and Charmed. She gained status of 50 Most Wicked Women of Prime Time after she played role of witch in ‘Charmed’. In 2007, AOL named Prue Halliwell the 9th greatest witch in television history. She appeared nude in Playboy magazine, first in December 1993, followed by a spread in March 1994. Doherty had reputation of ‘Bad Girl’ in Industry and she was fired by producers. Personal life –
In early 1993, Doherty was engaged to Max Factor heir Dean Jay Factor. He filed for a restraining order on May 25, 1993. He alleged physical violence and threats on the part of Doherty.
On October 11, 1993, Doherty married Ashley Hamilton, the son of actors George Hamilton and Alana Collins. They filed for divorce in April 1994.
In 2002, Doherty married poker player Rick Salomon, but the marriage was annulled after nine months. On October 15, 2011, Doherty married photographer Kurt Iswarienko in Malibu, California.
In November 2018, Doherty lost her house to the Woolsey Fire.
In April 2023, Doherty announced that she had filed for divorce from Iswarienko.
Doherty was politically Republican supporter.
Death –
In 1999, Doherty revealed that she had been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. In March 2015, Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer. Doherty underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy following surgery in 2016. On February 4, 2020, Doherty announced that her cancer had returned a year earlier, and had advanced to stage four. In June 2023, she announced that the cancer had spread to her brain and was terminal. In November 2023, she revealed that the cancer had spread to her bones.
Doherty died from cancer on July 13, 2024, at the age of 53 at her home in Malibu, California.
