Marilyn Monroe ( born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 – August 4, 1962) was born in Los Angeles, California. Marilyn Monroe was an Hollywood actress, model, singer and a pop culture icon. She is known for playing comic “blonde bombshell” characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s, as well as an emblem of the era’s sexual revolution. She was a top-paid actress for a decade, and her films grossed $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion in 2022) by the time of her death in 1962. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her as the sixth-greatest female screen legend from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Monroe was fruit of her mother’s adultery. Her father was Charles Stanley Gifford, a co-worker of her mother Gladys Pearl Baker, with whom she had an affair in 1925 when she was still married. She was married three times; her first marriage to John Baker produced two children when she was 15 or 16 years old. In January 1934, Gladys had a mental breakdown and was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. After several months in a rest home, she was committed to the Metropolitan State Hospital.
After her mother’s illness, She mostly lived in orphanage and with some other like Erwin “Doc” Goddard. She was sexually molested in her teenage. In 1942 when she faced having to return to the orphanage, as solution she married her neighbors’ 21-year-old son, factory worker James Dougherty, on June 19, 1942, just after her 16th birthday. Monroe dropped out of high school and became a housewife. She found herself and Dougherty mismatched, and later said she was “dying of boredom” during the marriage. She began modeling in 1944 after husband lived for two years outside of state. During 1944-48 she did modeling, nude photo for cover magazines and few small budged poor films.

From 1949-52 she gradually rose to prominence and became a sex symbol. In 1950 Monroe’s performances in The Asphalt Jungle to gain attention from film critics, one of her earliest performances to gain attention from film critics. During this period she had several sexual relations with directors and actors but In early 1952 her romance with retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio, one of the most famous sports personalities of the era was highly publicized . She became star in 1953 with film noir Niagara. It was one of her famous sexual film in which Monroe’s body was covered only by a sheet or a towel, considered shocking by contemporary audiences. Niagara‘s most famous scene is a 30-second long shot behind Monroe where she is seen walking with her hips swaying. It was criticized by many magazine and newspapers but she got Fastest Rising Star award. Her second film of 1953, the satirical musical comedy Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, it became biggest box office successes of the year. Next How to Marry a Millionaire also became superhit. Monroe become one of 20th Century-Fox’s biggest stars and married to player Joe DiMaggio in January 14, 1954. She was a sex symbol but not an actress and she was not satisfied. After filming for The Seven Year Itch wrapped up in November 1954, Monroe left Hollywood and established her own company Marilyn Monroe Productions (MMP). In October 1955 she divorced DiMaggio. During divorce period she also dated actor Marlon Brando and playwright Arthur Miller. On June 29, 1956, Monroe married to Miller. From 1956–1959 her films ‘bus stop’, ‘some like it hot’ The Prince and the Showgirl were critically acclaimed films. She received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her performance and Golden Globe for Best Actress for ‘some like it hot’. Year 1960 onwards her career was on decline and she was facing mental problems. Monroe and Miller separated in 1961. She spent the first six months of 1961 preoccupied by health problems. She underwent a cholecystectomy and surgery for her endometriosis, and spent four weeks hospitalized for depression. On the evening of August 4, 1962 she committed suicide.
