Ernest Hemingway ( July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American writer, novelist and adventurer who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for “The Old Man and the Sea”. His works include “The Sun Also Rises,” which established his reputation in 1926, “A Farewell to Arms” and “For Whom The Bell Tolls.” Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s. He published seven novels, six short-story collections, and two nonfiction works. Three of his novels, four short-story collections, and three nonfiction works were published posthumously. His works are considered classics and his writing inspired many writers.
Hemingway was raised by a mother who used to dress him in girl’s frilly dresses and hats when he was a toddler. It is said that Hemingway hated his for making him a girl. All of his life, Hemingway sought a masculine life of hunting, fishing and bullfighting, the wilderness, the sea, the road, the battlefield, free from the intrusive influence of women but also he could not live without women.
Hemingway married Hadley Richardson in 1920 when he was 21 and she, 29. It ended when he had an affair with Hadley’s best friend, Pauline Pfeiffer, who soon became the second wife. His third wife was Martha Gelhorn, 1940-1945, a marriage that he later called “his biggest mistake.” In 1944 he met journalist Mary Welsh in Paris and they married two years later. She wrote free-lance articles and typed her husband’s letters and manuscripts. She remained with him until his death. Hemingway loved cats and had many in his house.
Hemingway escaped death two times. In november end he was admitted at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He Suffering from paranoid delusions and high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a badly functioning liver, his depression. He was given electroshock treatments twice a week. He was discharged on 22 January 1961 but in 25 April he was admitted again for further treatment, as there were symptoms of self0destruction. On 2 July 1961 Hemingway shot himself with a gun.
