In Vedic astrology detriment houses are not allotted to planets. In Western astrology “strength” or “weakness” is largely judged according to sign occupation. Vedic astrology gives very subtle rules to judge the dignity of planets. A planet is said to be dignified in his own sign, in his mool trikon sign, in his sign of exaltation, in his friend’s sign, in his best friend’s sign, in his navansha, when it is vargottam in shodash vargas, in kendra, going towards his house of exaltation ( arohblanvit आरोहबलान्वित), when it obtains digbala, chestha bal etc. Then there are other rules- child like, adolescent, young and old state of planets according to their degree in odd and even sign. If a planet is at 18-24 degree in Aquarius(odd sign) it is old hence it has lost dignity. A planet at 24-30 degree in Aquarius is in dead state. what dignity it will have? The same planet in Even sign at 18-24 degree in Capricorn, it is adolescent and at 24-30 degree, it is child like. Hence at the same degree in odd sign a planet is dead while in even sign it is child like. There are other more subtle scheme like sleeping state, indulged in dancing, sitting state, going state, coming state etc. There are many different ways to judge the dignity of planets.
